Text, Sub and Otherwise

Lazy day today. Anne came over for the day, and we had a generally lazy veg-out day. It got off to a good start in that she actually managed to get here without getting lost. She seemed half convinced as she was leaving that she'd get lost on the way home instead. Worrying? Nah!

There was much discussion of her most recent diary entry and the fact that her colleagues either seem totally naive of the fact that she's a lesbian, or have worked it out for themselves but are too scared to actually confirm it with her. The t-shirt I'm getting her for her birthday (which must be getting on for 6 weeks ago now) should help sort a few of them out, although she's not entirely convinced that all of them will get it. The design is just text across the text, in a font mimmicking French Connection UK, saying "i don't fcuk, i'm a lebsian". Apparently there's a fair chance that the question "What's a lebsian?" will come up.

We watch Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, which Anne hadn't seen before. Mmmmmm, Eliza. This kinda lead to a discussion of how Eliza Dushku seems to end up in a lot of roles with at minimum lesbian subtext, or in the case of Soul Survivors, main text. Not that the two of us spent the entire day discussing lesbianism... oh no. During the evening there was at least 10 minutes when we were trying to decide what to watch but neither of us were feeling particularly decisive...

The trip to Leamington in the afternoon - mainly because I needed to acquire a birthday present for my dad - also had a certain amount of discussion of subtext. There was a computer game cover that we both thought had definite subtext to it, although by then we were probably leaning towards a certain amount of scraping of the bottom of the barrel by that point. It was raining and there wasn't enough women around who had been foolish enough to wear a white top in wet weather, so we had to resort to some form of entertainment. I also nearly outted Anne in Smiths for picking up the Official Companion Book to Charmed.

After watching a fair amount of Eddie Izzard Dressed To Kill, we somehow ended up online - I think it started off as checking something on IMDB. By a bizarre series of events, which probably take slightly more explanation than they're worth, which I am going to blame on Anne and she will no doubt blame on me, we ended up at this site. Originally we were looking for the pictures of Portia de Rossi out of Ally McBeal publicly outting herself with the assistance of her girlfriend. One of the pictures in particular was very very dodgy, we couldn't work out exactly what was going on there but it certainly looked like it could've been leaning towards what has, in the past, in certain public toilets, been classed as lewd behaviour. We also made a detailed assessment of the dogs they owned, based on some photos of them together while walking said animals, and what they said about which role in the relationship each woman played. The Rumour Mill on the website was hilarious, quoting stuff from sources that were quite unbelievably weak, but there were also some rather thought-provoking pictures of various couples and pairings. The picture of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Gellar from on of the I Know What You Did Last Summer publicity shoots was at the same time both innocent and subtexty. Check it out for yourself, and decide if we're just pervy individuals who need to get a life, or if we may be onto something. Actually, since we spent the better part of an hour on that site, I think it's pretty clear that we are just pervy individuals who need to get a life.

Still, it was a cool day, and getting to talk to Alison in a brief phone call made it even better. Sappy, but true. What did you expect? She is the love of my life, after all.
